with Our Dog Sports Programs
At Elevate Canine Academy, we believe every dog has untapped potential just waiting to be discovered. Serving the Bismarck/Mandan and Fargo/Moorhead areas, our dog sports programs are designed to elevate your canine companion's skills through engaging and dynamic training sessions while building a great bond with your dog.
Our range of services caters to every need, ensuring your dog gets the best training possible. Our obedience programs include:
- Scent Detection - This is a weekly class where we teach the dog to imprint a specific scent for the dog to locate. This is a program at both our Bismarck and Fargo location.
Scent Detection: Program Information
Our scent detection program is every Thursday at 7 PM in Bismarck, and 6 PM in Fargo, during the colder months. The cost is $30 per session, and the sessions go for an hour. Scent detection is the ability for a dog to "remember" a very specific scent and locate it. Our program is self paced, so where ever your dog leaves off on a previous session, that is where we begin the next session. This program is designed as something fun to do with your dog, but if you would like to compete with your dog in scent detection you could pursue that.
These are the areas we cover
-Understanding scent and tracking principles
- Handler skills and communication
-Scent discrimination
-Trail laying techniques (tracking and Trailing)
-Basic scent detection exercises
- Variable terrain training
-Distraction training

- Tracking - This is a weekly program we run in the summer months when it is nice to be outside. Our tracking program is geared towards people that want to do something fun with their dog. Tracking is the discipline of smelling for disruptions on the ground. This can be ground disturbance or skin raft falling off the human that made that track.
Tracking: Program Information
Our tracking program is every Thursday at 7 PM in Bismarck, and 6 PM in Fargo, during the warmer months. The cost is $30 per session, and the sessions go for an hour. Tracking is the ability for a dog to smell disruptions on the ground.
So they aren't taught a specific odor, but what smells different in the environment. Our program is self paced, so where ever your dog leaves off on a previous session, that is where we begin the next session. This program is designed as something fun to do with your dog, but if you would like to compete with your dog in tracking, or would like to pursue search and rescue, this will prepare you for that discipline.

- Advanced Obedience for Sport - This is a weekly training session that pushes the dog's obedience to a higher level. This program is built around the American Schutzhund competition requirements. However, we are not affiliated with American Schutzhund. This program is typically on Thursday evenings, when we are running the program.
Advanced Obedience: Program Information
Advanced Obedience in American Schutzhund
Advanced obedience in American Schutzhund is a cornerstone of the sport, showcasing the incredible bond between dog and handler through precise, dynamic, and challenging exercises. This phase is designed to highlight the dog's control, focus, and responsiveness under various levels of distraction and pressure. It serves as the foundation for success in the other phases of the sport while promoting clear communication and teamwork.
Key components of advanced obedience include:
- Off-Leash Heeling: Dogs must demonstrate sustained attention and maintain perfect position at the handler's side while navigating patterns that include turns, changes in pace, and distractions such as groups of people or unexpected sounds.
- Sit, Down, and Stand in Motion: These exercises challenge the dog to perform commands swiftly and accurately while the handler continues to move. This tests the dog's ability to maintain focus and self-control without hesitation.
- Recall with Precision: The recall exercise showcases the dog's ability to come to the handler quickly and directly upon command, finishing in the proper position with enthusiasm and precision.
- Retrieving Exercises: Dogs retrieve dumbbells or other objects over flat ground and obstacles, such as jumps or walls. These exercises highlight the dog’s drive, willingness, and confidence in completing a task while maintaining obedience.
- Send Out (Go Out): The dog is sent away from the handler in a straight line to a designated point, such as a marker or boundary, and must respond immediately to the handler’s command to lie down.
- Distraction Training: Throughout advanced obedience, dogs must maintain composure and execute tasks despite environmental challenges like moving vehicles, loud noises, or other dogs working nearby.
The advanced obedience portion of American Schutzhund emphasizes reliability, precision, and enthusiasm. It reflects the dog’s high level of training and mental stability, as well as the handler’s skill in creating a balanced partnership. For those who compete, advanced obedience is not only a technical challenge but also an opportunity to showcase the deep connection and trust shared with their canine partner.
